Choose the type and style of brush that best suits your needs: Natural Bristle brushes generally have a greater holding capacity for smoother, broader coverage and require fewer breaks to reload. They form soft shapes especially well-suited to lose, painterly styles of brush work. Synthetic Bristle brushes tend to have a tighter more defined shape making them more suitable for detailed design work. Their holding capacity is a little lower requiring more breaks to reload the brush.

Synthetic Sables

Tolene Synthetic Sables
Bailey has offered few synthetic bristle brushes over the years but the Tolene Synthetic Sable brushes listed below are quite remarkable. Unusually soft, super-pointed bristles have better strength and resiliency than many natural brushes. They exhibit very good holding properties — as close to natural sable as we’ve ever seen. Exactingly hand-crafted and durable for the highest quality at a fantastic price!

Long Liners (TX1 Series)
Long, slender, round arrangement of bristles that form an extra-fine point. Excellent for drawing long flowing lines, outlining, banding and calligraphy. Width of largest size bristles is approx. 1/8". 

Pointed Rounds (TX3 Series)
A proportionately shorter and thicker arrangement of bristles gives tighter control than the TX1 Series. Two sizes for broadstrokes and brushwork. Width of largest size bristles is approx. 1/4". 

"Cat's Tongue" Filberts (TX4 Series)
A “flat” configuration of bristles that taper to a point width-wise. Creates a nice variety of brush strokes, both narrow and wide, depending the angle and direction in which you brush. Width of largest size bristles is approx. 3/16". 

Short Shader (TX7 Series)
Short, crisp, square bristles for flat area coverage. Width of largest size bristles is approx. 3/8". 

Slanted Shader (TX5 Series)
Medium-length bristles in a flat configuration cut on a clean, crisp angle: perfect for edging, striping and cutting in blocks of color. Width of bristles is approx. 3/8". 

Natural Hair

SUMI Natural Kazan Hair brushes
Possibly the best brush for overglaze and luster work due to its super-soft bristles and excellent holding capacity. Liquid flows smoothly off these brushes for even coverage with minimal brush marks, Equally nice for any light to medium consistency material (underglaze, glaze, washes, paints etc.). Available in (3) styles for a full range of brush work.

SUMI Pointed Rounds (Q70s)
In a full range of sizes, these brushes feature a full-bodied, round arrangement of super-pointed bristles. Relatively short for excellent control from details to broad brush strokes. Width of largest size bristles is approx. 5/16". 

SUMI Shade (Q80s)
Medium-length soft square shaders with full straight-cut bristles for banding and broad coverage. Width of largest size bristles is approx. 1/2".

SUMI-Tongue (Filbert) (Q60s)
A “softer” Filbert-shape: flat configuration tapered inward from the sides to a more rounded point. Makes a wide variety of expressive, soft-flowing brush strokes depending on brush angle and direction. Width of largest size bristles is approx. 1/2". 

Camel Hair Decorating Brushes
Full, round brushes of natural Camel hair for smooth, even coverage in a wide variety of sizes. Similar shape to the Sumi Rounds but with a fuller point. Width of largest size bristles is approx. 5/16". . 

Red Sable Shaders
Long-bristled flats of medium to soft Red Sable have very good holding capacity and resiliency for area coverage and banding. Width of largest size bristles is approx. 3/8".

Long Dagger
Resilient Squirrel hair in a specialized “dagger” formation for striping, calligraphy and a wide variety of brush strokes. Extra long for increased holding capacity.

Fan Blenders
Coarse white Hog bristles in a wide flat fan for dry-brushwork, blending and stippling.

Camel Hair Glaze Brushes
Economical, medium grade, all-purpose flats: popular with schools. A combination of slightly coarse Camel and Ox hair for durability and good holding capacity.

Sable & Ox Hair Brush Set
A very good all-purpose starter set for students. Includes fine quality Red Sable brushes: #1, #3 & #5 Round and #4 Flat plus a 5/8” Ox hair glaze brush.

Long-Handled, Angled "Wax" Brush
A handy inexpensive brush with a 9” long handle and a specially angled head for extra comfort when covering large horizontal surfaces, We found these brushes great for applying wax resist to the bottoms of tiles and pots. The angled head reduces stress on your wrist while the long full bristles hold plenty of wax for large area coverage. The bristles are coarse enough to stand up to the viscosity of wax but soft enough to apply it smoothly. This tough brush tolerates cleaning well.

Oriental Brushes

Oriental Brush Care
When new, some Oriental Brushes have starched bristles to protect and maintain their shape during handling. Loosen the bristles and wash out with water to remove this starch. Prior to each use, soak the brush-head in water to remove all the air, then form bristles into a point: you are now ready to paint. After each use, rinse thoroughly with cool water, reshape bristles and allow to air dry. If possible, hang from the handle (bristles down) when not in use.
