Craft in America:
Celebrating Two Centuries of Artists & Objects—The complete PBS
series—DVD
Craft in America explores the significance of the craft movement in the US
and its impact on the nation’s cultural heritage. The last two hundred
years have brought extraordinary transformation to America—not just in
the landscape and culture but also to the myriad communities that
crisscross the continent. The three episodes examine the historical
relevance of craft, the relationship between artists and their media, and
the social and emotional connections that crafts embody. From American
Indians and enslaved Africans who worked with indigenous materials to
religious people such as Shakers, whose clean lines reflect adherence to
simplicity; from designers of the Arts and Crafts Movement for whom
handmade objects held a moral integrity and righteousness to the
government-sponsored WPA artist who created in the service of their
nation, to today’s studio artists reimagining meaning and methods, Craft
in America unfolds a rarely examined side of our history. (180 minutes)

Shoji Hamada:
A Potter's Way and Work
This is a fascinating portrait of a great potter. It traces his place in
the ceramic tradition and reveals his energetic life style, his dazzling
work cycle, and intriguing specifics about the firing of his kilns. The
text with over 200 new color photographs from Peterson's 1970 stay at

Classic Stoneware of Japan
- Shino and Oribe (no
discount)
Though Japan today has become one of the world's most industrialized,
mechanized, and computerized nations, it still boasts one of the world's
most fascinating ceramic traditions.
Two of the country's most remarkable styles
of pottery are Shino and Oribe, both originating in ancient Mino Province
(modern-day Gifu Prefecture) from the time of Japan's artistic
"renaissance" in the late sixteenth century.
Oribe ware is one of the most startling and
innovative expressions not only of this period but of all Japanese
pottery. In a departure from the more refined tea ceremony utensils that
represent the meditative aspect of the ceremony, Oribe ware has a more
earthy feel, with its layering of naturally occurring colors: a piece
might be made of red and white clay, with green glaze over the white
portion, and line decorations done in iron over a coat of white slip on
the red part. This ware is named for Furuta Oribe, who in his time was the
undisputed master of the tea ceremony and who, it is said, commissioned
certain kilns to make these pots after his own designs.
Classic Stoneware of Japan offers a
comprehensive visual survey and a basic understanding of these traditions'
glazes, processes, shapes and decoration. The reader comes away with a
clear idea of the essence of these wares and an ability to instantly
recognize either. It will be invaluable for anyone interested in pottery,
design or art. (10.5" X 8" 1/2" Hardcover) 112 Pages with
over 130 full color images. By Ryoji Kuroda and Takeshi Murayama

The Potter's Brush - The
Kenzan Style in Japanese Ceramics
Ogata Kenzan
(1663-1743) is celebrated as Japan's most inventive creator of ceramic
decoration and foremost workshop master. His reputation is a product both
of his own time - an eighteenth- century Japanese guidebook noted his work
as a "must buy"-and of the modern age: the esteem in which he is
held in Japan was ignited in the West as critics, art dealers, and
collectors vied for his colorfully painted and inscribed work at the turn
of the twentieth century. The Potter's Brush explores the appropriation of
the Kenzan name, detailing two centuries of innovation and reproduction,
and charting the evolution of what amounts to a designer brand of
ceramics. Abundantly illustrated in full color, with a complete inventory
of the Freer Gallery of Art collection, this radical survey offers new
ways of looking at both the works themselves and the strategies whereby
their status has been established in the art world. (9-1/2" X

Chinese
Ceramics - A New Comprehensive Survey
The extraordinary innovations of Chinese potters count among
the most outstanding accomplishments in the cultural heritage of the world
since the Neolithic era. In over 700 color photographs specially taken for
this book, a wide range of imperial and regional, decorative and
practical, export and domestic, ceremonial and funerary wares are fully
represented. These are organized into four chronologically arranged
sections, from the Neolithic to the end of the Qing dynasty. The many
discoveries of recent years have not only affected scholarly attributions
of date and origin, and hence fashions in collecting, invalidating the
approaches taken by previous publications, but are the only sure guide in
helping to distinguish genuine wares from the many high-quality
reproductions that have appeared on the international market. This book
will be an indispensable resource for all collectors, connoisseurs and
students of Chinese ceramics, as well as anyone with an interest in Asia’s
rich cultural heritage. (13” X 9 ¾” X 1 ½” Hardcover) He Li (352
